What is c hronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)?

COPD is a broad term for lung conditions that block airways and cause breathing-related problems.

COPD gets worse over time and can lead to severe lung damage and other serious health issues — even death.

Fact: More women and people assigned female at birth (AFAB) are diagnosed with COPD than men.

Certain reproductive factors can increase the risk for COPD

These can include:

Starting your period before age 11

Giving birth to 3 or more children

Experiencing multiple miscarriages or stillbirth

Starting menopause before age 40

Did you know?

Most cases of COPD are diagnosed during menopause.

Hormonal changes can increase inflammation in the lungs

A drop in estrogen = increased vulnerability to COPD

Age-related decline in lung function may speed up during perimenopause and menopause

Post-menopausal people are at higher risk for respiratory problems compared to people who are not in menopause

Signs of COPD

A cough that doesn’t go away

Shortness of breath

Persistent wheezing

Don’t let COPD take your breath away
