Awards
Dr. White is a Bronze Star recipient earned while stationed as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Vietnam. He has focused on the national fight for equality in health care and published the book Seeing Patients: Unconscious Bias in Health Care.
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons selected him to receive its Diversity Award in 2006 and its William W. Tipton Jr. Leadership Award in 2010. The 2018 annual issue of The Orthopaedic Journal at Harvard Medical School was dedicated to him as a faculty member who had significantly impacted the orthopaedic residency program.
Honors
Dr. White was a Brown University Alumni Trustee, served on the Board of Fellows from 1981 to 1992, and as member of the Committee on Medical Education (1991-1996). He was the President and co-founder of the J. Robert Gladden Society, whose mission “is to increase diversity within the orthpaedic profession and promote the highest quality musculoskeletal care for all people.”
In 1989, Dr. White was appointed President of the University of Maryland at Baltimore. In 1996, Dr. White served as Chairman of the Diversity Committee of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He authored the textbook Clinical Biomechanics of the Spine and the book for patients Your Aching Back. Since retiring from surgery in 2001, Dr. White has researched and written about issues of diversity and cultural sensitivity in medicine.

Dr. White was the first African American medical student at Stanford, surgical resident at Yale University, professor of medicine at Yale, and department head at a Harvard-affiliated hospital (Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center). He was a guest speaker for a Black History Month Fireside Chat for the Harvard University Schools of Medicine, Public Health, and Dental Medicine in 2019.
He spoke at the Feagin Leadership Forum at Duke University and presented at Grand Rounds in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
