Dr. Harris Gibson, MD eleifend

Distinguished cardiothoracic surgeon


Dr. Gibson graduated Alabama State University, a Historically Black College, received a Master’s in Biology from Northwestern University, and a MD from Meharry Medical College in 1961. Dr. Gibson is a distinguished cardiothoracic surgeon and for years, he was affiliated with Winchester Hospital.


I joined the Augustus White Institute for Healthcare Equity to continue to advocate for health care for all patients and to improve culturally competent care. Also, as a young man, I attended Dexter Avenue Baptist Church and was inspired by its pastor, Dr. Martin Luther King.

Dr. Gibson has given considerable time and resources to social action initiatives on behalf of others. Dr. Gibson has served as Chairman of the Committee on Diversity for the Winchester Public School system which resulted in the hiring of an African American woman in a leadership role on diversity. He has been a volunteer with the mentoring program, Boston Partners in Education, for thirty-seven years during which time he visited every public school in Boston including the exam schools and magnet schools.

Achievements

Through his affiliation with the National Medical Association, he has raised funds to provide four, 4-year scholarships for African American medical students based on financial need; organized a hypertension screening clinic at Shilow Baptist Church in Medford, Massachusetts and has been a host family for a Better Chance students.
