Dr. Mark C. Gebhardt is the Frederick W. and Jane M. Ilfeld Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School, and has been a practicing orthopaedic surgeon in Boston since 1983.


I joined the Augustus White Institute for Healthcare Equity to continue to advocate for health care for all patients and to improve culturally competent care.

He has worked toward improving culturally competent care by being a mentor in the AAOS Communication Workshops and working with Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society (primarily women in orthopaedics) and the J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society (under-represented minorities in Orthopaedics). His work in mentoring women and minorities in orthopaedics has included recruiting women and minorities to the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program and his Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at BIDMC. ‍Dr. Gebhardt is an orthopaedic oncologist specializing in pediatric bone and soft tissue sarcomas and benign musculoskeletal tumors. He is past-President of numerous professional medical societies the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society, the Connective Tissue Oncology Society, the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons, and the Massachusetts Orthopaedic Association. He served on the AAOS Board of Directors, Chaired the Board of Specialty Societies, and served as Director of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

Achievements

Dr. Gebhart received a BS in Biology with honors from Bucknell University and his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of MedicineSurgical training at the University of PittsburghOrthopaedic residency at the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program followed by fellowships in pediatric orthopaedic surgery and orthopaeic oncology.
