MEASUREMENTS

We expect to measure the impact of the mental health campaign as part of the beta test of the (i) community forum concept at a local Boys and Girls Club in Massachusetts and (ii) healthcare app, which will be curated with Black and Brown young adults in mind and include ways to access existing services. As we bring communities Black and Brown together to discuss the benefits of mental health wellness, we anticipate measuring:

  • Changes in community views of mental health stigmas using App surveys
  • Number of community residents that sign up to be trained listeners, (community volunteers who will listen to participants in need of someone to talk to.)
  • Number of young adults who sign up for the listening program
  • Any increase in young adults seeking mental health services (collect data using the App and compare with existing data)
  • Changes in relationships within families using App surveys,
  • Any decrease in the percentage of young adults with mild depression and anxiety becoming clinical and in need of mental health services
  • any increase in mental health services being provided in Black/Brown communities, which includes healthcare insurers
  • OUTCOMES

We envision that our efforts will result in as follows:

    1. Decrease in mental health stigmas in Black/Brown communities (grass roots effort)
    2. Improved family relationships -better communications on stressful issues such as employment, college performance, sexual identify/orientation, and cyber bullying
    3. Improved community relationship between Black/Brown residents and local governments by working together on Institute’s local community committee (grass roots effort)
    4. Pairing of trained listeners with young adults will help decrease the number of young adults in the 80% group that have mild depression and anxiety from becoming clinical.
    5. Trained listeners will support participants who are unable to access mental health services because of the lack of available mental health professionals trained to treat Black and Brown young adults, and/or they lack the resources to pay for services if they can find them. (grassroots effort)
    6. Will pressure on healthcare service providers, insurers, and local leaders to focus more attention and resources on this demographic group as 49% of young adults aged 18 to 25 are minorities. Preventive medicine is good business and helps build healthy communities. (public policy effort)
